drops will surface here as they happen.

We exist because the city forgot how to play.

San Francisco is one of the most creative, strange, and stubbornly optimistic places on earth. It has always attracted people who believe things can be different. That belief built something real here: a culture of invention, of risk, of swinging at things that seem impossible.

But somewhere along the way, the invention turned inward. The risk became financial. The impossible things all started looking the same. The city that once asked what kind of world do we want to live in started asking what is the market size of that world.

We are not against any of it. We are just not interested in it right now.

We are interested in the other thing. The older thing. The thing that was here before the valuations and will be here after them. The thing that happens when a stranger leaves a note for another stranger and both of them feel, for a moment, less alone in a city of a million people.

That thing is what we do.

What Side Quest SF is

Side Quest SF is an anonymous, ongoing series of small interventions dropped around the city of San Francisco. Objects, experiences, and encounters designed to bring more art, more whimsy, and more unexpected human connection to daily life.

No app. No RSVP. No agenda.

We leave things in public spaces. We seal things in jars. We ask absurd questions and record true stories and plant treasure maps in coffee shops and leave envelopes on park benches for people having hard days. We make objects that hold a mirror up to the city's most beloved delusions.

We do this anonymously because the anonymity is the point. When there is no one to credit there is nothing to sell. When there is nothing to sell the thing becomes purely itself. A gift. A question. A small proof that someone was here and was paying attention.

Why it exists

Because attention is the scarcest resource in this city and we want to give people somewhere to put it that isn't a screen.

Because the line between art and a prank and an act of love is thinner than most people think and we want to live on that line.

Because there is something happening right now in this city that needs to be named and what it is is this: people are building the future so aggressively that they have forgotten to inhabit the present.

We are not here to stop the building. We are here to put something small and strange and beautiful in the path of the builders so they have to stop and look at it for thirty seconds.

Thirty seconds is enough.

What we believe

We believe in the gift. Not the transaction, not the exchange, not the value creation. The gift. The thing given with no expectation of return, no conversion event, no funnel.

We believe that whimsy is not frivolous. It is an act of resistance against a culture that wants everything to be legible, optimized, and monetized.

A phone number you call to hear a stranger's true story about this city resists that culture.

A buried tin with a guest book that only people who followed a hand-drawn map will ever find resists that culture.

A note left for a stranger having a bad day resists that culture.

Who we are

We are anonymous.

We are designers and artists and writers and wanderers and people who used to work in tech and people who still do and people who moved here for something they haven't found yet and people who found it and aren't sure what to do with it.

We are not a startup. We are not a nonprofit. We are not a community platform or a media brand or an experience company. We are a practice. We show up and we make things and we put them in the world and we don't wait to find out what happens.

The invitation

If you found something: it's yours.

If you feel moved to make something and leave it somewhere: do that. A crescent moon in the corner if you want it connected to this. Or nothing at all.
